I've been thinking of some writing exercises to try out lately.
One in particular I thought of was thinking of ways to make classic movies, tv show episodes and books even better than they already are, and writing scenes/updates to those to make them better, whether it be in a comical or ridiculous way, or in a serious tone.
Some of the thoughts I had included two of my favorite books I read in high school, Wuthering Heights and The Great Gatsby...For Wuthering Heights, I was going to write a bit more about the locket that Catherine has that she keeps the two locks of hair in....but I need to actually finish re-reading the book before I can do that. And for The Great Gatsby, I think I'd follow up with Gatsby living and killing someone or another. Obviously it hasn't been all the way thought out yet...
But yeah...hopefully I'll have those coming down the pike. I'm considering trying my hand at animated show scripts again. I was talking to someone I work with about a script I wrote for an episode of The Simpsons in 10th grade and she thought it was really funny. I really wish I still had a copy of it. I liked it a lot too and if nothing else, it was a good way to boost my confidence in my ability to write.
I think I'm more of a comedy writer than anything else and I think thats what makes writing so difficult for me at times because I realize that a lot of the things that make me laugh don't really do a whole lot for other people. Some of its too subtle, but a lot of times its just that I have private jokes in my head. I don't know if that makes me crazy or not....hmmm.
I think I'll end this with a few good quotes on writing so they'll at least be something worthwhile in these entries:
"There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein." Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith
"Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia" - E. L. Doctorow
"Don't tell me the moon is shining. Show me the glint of light on a broken glass" -Anton Chekov
More later...Writers have such interesting quips about their own work...
